From Warriors And Maidens:Since few families own grazing land, they must pay
landowners on the plains dearly for upkeep of herded animals during the winter. This cost is approximately one hundred drachmas per beast, although in some years it may be considerably more. Expenditure for one hundred animals is between 10,000 and 16,000 drachmas. The cost of fodder varies with the onset of winter and the ownership of winter quarters: Pavlos owns pasture near Almirou Bay; his son herds their joint flock of 200 sheep. Pavlos walks miles to the winter quarters to give his son food, and often returns, soaked to the skin, desperately cold. He needs 12,000 drachmas for fodder (the cost varies between sixty to one hundred drachmas per sheep. The bank will not always advance money, but when it does, it calls in loans around June or July when cash from sale of lambs, milk and cheese becomes available.Miltos has ten children and seventy sheep; each year he sells about twenty of forty lambs. From this year’s lambs he will get about 16,000 drachmas. He borrowed 10,000 drachmas from the Agricultural Bank, which he hopes to pay back between April and August. He must do this if he wants to raise a further loan. He is so poor he cannot bring the sheep down from the mountains and keeps them in a cave. Ownership of winter grazing is a great advantage because this is the biggest expense of herding. This framed paper poster brings quiet, contemplative energy to any wall.
