Ok thanks for stopping in. It took me a while to find out with this old
industrial wooden piece is/was used for. Apparently back in the day this was used in one of the first steps in collecting wool in a thin sheet to create amongst many things but one is a Cowboy felt hat. So as it comes out of this machine of some sort it is wrapped around this form much like a cocoon that once it reaches a certain thickness it is then cut in half at the center to create the beginnings of two hats. They start out as cone shapes then are worked in and through a variety of automated and hand made steps to fashion it into a the shape of particular style of hat...if you go to FM Hat Company Tour on Youtube you can see the same piece being used in the introduction...it really is quite a fascinating process. In short it is an antique industrial Cone form for making wool felt hats such as Cowboy hats. It is now an industrial Mid Century Modern Sculpture that is not interesting but fairly easy to look at and enjoy. I think it would make a great side table.
