Up for consideration is an extremely rare Bombe form P.E. Guerdin Bronze Mounted
NY Vernis Martin inspired antique Bonheur du Jour Writing desk with candle sconces and clock. The piece stands 51.5 inches in height by 36 inches wide with a depth of 21 inches. It has all the bells and whistles of a high end piece of furniture It is of excellent quality with fine bronze mounted appliques and hand painted continuous scenes and embellishments. Specifically it means the piece is painted all over and is decorated with NY's premier Co. whom cast the finest bronze cast decorative hardware...a piece that can be displayed in the center of room without excuses. It is striking and unique. It probably dates from the turn of the century or slightly earlier and represents a time in history when America no longer looked to France and Europe as the the epicenter of high quality furniture. It was NY and New York did very well for itself during the mid to the latter part of the 19th century before passing the torch on to the Grand Rapids era in the American Midwest. This Rococo piece is signed "P.E. Guerdin NY" on the back of the top bronze piece located above the clock. P.E. Guerdin is a NY Company founded in NY which produced high quality hardware for furniture and items of house hold use. It was founded in around the 1850's and is still in production today... This was built such that someone could use it at that time...the sconces held candles to be used of which we were just heading toward electricity. Likewise given the telephone etc was in it's infancy the desk was an important part of one's possessions as it was the center of the universe housing correspondence, post cards, calling cards, writing implements, ink, photos a time piece, wax seals, paper, envelopes, stamps, clips glue invitations cards etc...it was a different time era with people who were no different than who we are today.Condition: all original with light signs of wear...except for the clock. The clock mechanism is missing. Light paint loss along back leg seam...minor scuffs along legs all bronze pieces are present...The key is present and works on the main drawer...the drawers are super tight as the piece was not used much...a custom made desk writing pad was made to cover which sits over the what probably is the original red velour inset writing era.
