Detroit Artist Joseph Gies (1865-1935). The painting is signed lower left and on the verso as well as being partially titled on the back. The painting measures 13.75 by about 19 inches with the overall dimensions of the frame being 19 by 22". It is signed lower left and signed on the top back with a covered up title noting "painted about 1907". The painting is very well done no doubt he was a great artist...the painting is canvas laid on board...it is slightly dark with old varnish...frame is not in very good condition with some terrible gold paint......Please see photos as part the description. Biography:Joseph Gies was a significant connection to the Detroit painting scene. Born in Detroit in 1860, he spent most of his life in and around the area. Except for his studies aboard with William A. Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury in Paris; Royal Academy in Munich. His contributions to the local art community were meaningful. In 1890 the Detroit Museum School was formed. That year Joseph Gies became an important member of the painting faculty. In 1895, the Art Club of Detroit was formed and held it's first annual exhibition. Robert Hopkin, Joseph Gies and Francis Petrus Paulus were involved in the exhibition, which consisted of a display of contemporary American artists, including a substantial local contingent plus American and European paintings lent by private collectors. Also, in 1895, Gies and Paulus opened the Detroit Fine Arts Academy. When Paulus returned to Europe, the portraitist John Palmer Wicker, who taught with Gies at the Museum School took his place as co-director. The Fine Arts Academy was renamed the Wicker School of Fine Arts, after Gies retired in 1911 to resume full-time painting.Source: "Joseph W. He studied in New York at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union and Art Students League, and continued at the Royal Academy in Munich, and in Paris at Académie Julian with William Bourereau and Robert-Fleury.When the Detroit Museum School opened in 1890, he became a member of the faculty. In 1895 he opened the Detroit Fine Arts Academy and taught there until 1911. During winters he made painting trips to other parts of the U.S. including California.
