Warriors And Maidens: Cultural codes in a western Cretan Mountain Village
Taken as part of my ethnographic fieldwork in Asi Gonia Crete. One reaches Pallikari by driving east from Chania along the northern coastal road. Soon after passing the plains of Almirou Bay, one reaches the village of Episkopi, whence a tarmac road winds inland past wheat-gold olive groves. After ten kilometres, at Argyroupolis, a rocky dirt track snakes off to the right alongside a gorge down which a river sometimes rapids after summer rains and winter thaws. In winter this gorge is starkly dramatic, dominated by huge bare plane trees whose white branches reach, beseechingly in grotesque poses, towards the sky. Amongst those tortured trees are myrtle, oleander, laurel, bay, chestnut and arbutus. To the right of the track, going towards the village, rises a wall of red mud and loose rocks that occasionally collapse in landfalls on the road. These barriers blend into climbing fields of scrub spotted with wild trees and cactus. After a steep climb, the road twists and turns until all at once the density of olive trees increases and Pallikari springs forth from its concealed niche beneath a barren mountainside, which looms above terraced vineyards lining the dry sun-baked valley slopes.
