AN AVERAGE FAMILY

An average family owns fifteen stremmas (one stremma =2471 acres) of cultivated
land (known as bread-land— psomohorafi) for growing oats or barley, four of irrigated land and two stremmas of garden used for a large variety of vegetables: potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peas, green peppers, spinach, courgettes, cauliflowers, cabbage, okra, corn, onions, garlic, artichokes, cucumber, leeks, beans, pumpkins, pulses and vetch. A vineyard of two stremmas provides about eighty kilograms of wine used for family consumption and several kilograms of tsikoudhia (a fiery clear spirit prepared from grape stems).
