A beautiful original acrylic by celebrated Ojibway artist Leo “Sweetpea”
Neilson, signed and dated ’91 in his signature yellow. Painted on Arches France fine art paper (visible embossed watermark in lower right). The piece shows a loon family — two adults paired in mirrored composition with two chicks among the cattails — a quintessential Sweetpea “family” theme rendered in his airy spray-and-sponge style. Just professionally framed and double-matted by Rare Antiques in a rich walnut-stained solid wood frame with a clean white linen mat and black accent border. Ready to hang. Comes with our shop label on the back. Approximate size: 32” x 40” framedMedium: Acrylic on Arches paperSigned: Yes, lower left in yellow, dated ’91Condition: Excellent — fresh framing, glass intact, no issues About the artist Leo “Sweetpea” Neilson is an Ojibway artist from Peguis First Nation, Manitoba. The nickname “Sweetpea” was given to him in childhood by his mother, who was from the St. Peter’s reserve, and it stuck. He began painting at 16 and was mentored by fellow Ojibway artists Garry Meeches and Isaac Bignell, drawing strong inspiration from Benjamin Chee Chee. His distinctive style — acrylic applied with sponge and brush in soft, atmospheric layers — most often features geese, loons, and other waterfowl with family themes at the heart of the work. His first international show in Pasadena in March 1987 sold out in three days, with a similarly successful Denver show following. His art also appears on signs along the Chief Peguis Trail in Winnipeg — the only First Nations artist commissioned by the City of Winnipeg’s Transportation Department. Original Sweetpea paintings, especially larger framed pieces from this era, are increasingly hard to come by. Ships carefully packaged from Windsor, Ontario. Local pickup welcome.
