Up for consideration is fine and Rare John King Jr & Son Optician and Mathematical Instruments 2 Clare St. Bristol England Celestial Globe. The Globe measures about 18 inches in diameter and stands about 43 inches in height. The Cartouche is almost completely readable and looks like a Smith's Cartouche using the Royalty Emblem with Lion and Unicorn however there is no Smith name on the Cartouche furthermore it appears that there is an overlay strip on the bottom with claims of "King & Son Optician and Mathematical Instruments Co" which has been known to operate at 2 Clare in "Bristol" from about 1821 to 1831 of which there was separation in business between Father and Son as the son had an affair on his wife and father did not think too kindly of that and they split. It is marked "Majesty George IV" which places the date at some time before 1830. Please see photos. The piece would have a stretcher on the bottom which joined in the center of which held a compass. Furthermore these were always paired up with the matching Terrestial globes. Even assimilated pairs can bring 40 to 60,000 thousand dollars in this form. One can find Microscopes etc...related to this firm J. King & Son however other things of this magnitude are far less abundant. Condition is not all that great but at least it is here with us and deserves to be restored. It really is a museum piece as we can trace it's roots back to a particular store and of which the Father in son worked together...and of course there are not many examples out there bearing that name. And that's how the world turns a little name or signature here or there means a World of difference. If you have any questions concerns or something to share please feel free to contact me.
