Up for consideration is original Belgian Old Masters Oil Painting of Sheep
Grazing by Eugene Verboeckhoven (1778-1881). The painting alone measures about 20 inches by 28.5 inches with overall dimensions being around 31 by 36 inches. The frame is deep heavy and mind you not in the greatest condition but nonetheless monumental. It is signed and dated for 1839 which is fairly early for the artist. The painting is very well done and is in reasonable condition considering it's age. There is an old flake repair at the center of the work. It looks like a paint chip of which it is reglued. Please see photos. There is a hand written paper label on the back which may be a title along with a " 1881 Succession Verboeckhoven" red wax seal which may be a sort of authentication or estate seal of which matches the date of the artist's death in 1881. Hence it is possible that the piece was part of the artist's estate and thusly sold after his death with settling of the estate. This helps out with the provenance and authentication process which can also add to the overall appeal for collectors and museums etc...Verboeckhoven is highly sought after and his more significant works range from $20,000 to over $200,000 and are handled by the best auction houses in the world. Given the quality, size, date, estate seal. title, etc...we believe this to be a fair market value...the painting could stand a possible cleaning and some minor repair work however one must understand that the painting is over 180 years of age and historically significant. Eugene Verboeckhoven is deemed to be one of the foremost animal painters of the nineteenth century. In Verboeckhoven's work animals often bear human characteristics and are reminiscent of bourgeois portraits of the time. In his book on Verboeckhoven, Berko writes "he could have been called the "Raphael of sheep", for his rams are so well drawn, arrogant and proud; his ewes surrounded by graceful lambs, look gentle and complacent as ewes do, and all his pastoral scenes are bathed in a warm, pleasing and golden light. Eugene Verboeckhoven was a remarkable painter of horses, goats and game; he also painted small figures on foot or on horseback, playing scrupulous attention to detail; the gun, the powder flask, the hunter's gaiters, down to the picturesque hat, the threadbare overcoat, the shepherd's crook, and of course the last-born baby lamb under the shepherd's arm."
