Pair NY E.F. Caldwell Massive Architectural Bronze Wall Sconces Single Arm Torch

$ 3950.00
Up for consideration is an old pair of Antique Gilt Bronze single arm large
architectural wall sconces by E.F. Caldwell. Please see a man's size 11 shoe in the background shot to show you the sheer scale of these.  The sconces stand out from the wall by 15 inches with a 9 inch in diameter backplate (more often then not on regular sconces the backplate is maybe 4 inches or less). They measure about 14 inches in height and substantially more when one adds large frosted globes or torchere style shades.  These are on the scale of which one would see inside a large bank or courtroom Postal Building or mansion estate in and around the turn of the century these type of sconces were inside very  highend decorative building...although they are highly decorative they were probably for public consumption meaning they were out on display helping individuals by lighting up areas. The casting is very fine with French style hand finished textured finish on scrolling acanthus leaves. The backplates have a thin sheet of heavy pressed board that acted like a washer or gasket as to not ruin the finish on the wall to which they were mounted on. Caldwell used this type of backing on most of their large applications. I haven't taken the backing off so they may or may not be marked. Top portion of these leading up to the socket is 7 inches in diameter I mean that is huge. The fitter size is 3 inch. These probably had shades that were in the 8 to 10 inches range in diameter. Globes are readily available to suit your needs... however great old sconces are not.  There is some minor discoloration in the patina. No visible repairs. Please understand that these weigh about 15 lbs or so each. These would make a grand entranceway even grander with these handsome Neo-Classical styled Antique Sconces. They date from about 1910 or so...remember a great estate without proper lighting is like wearing a wonderful suit with cheap shoes. It just doesn't work unless that's what you want to do...then be my guest. Anyways Caldwell is about as good as it gets for high end American lighting in the old world category.   If you have any questions concerns or something to share please feel free to contact me.
