These silhouettes were cut from life and embellished with symbolic details that reflected each subject’s character and accomplishments. Nathaniel Potter Tallmadge, born in New York in 1795, studied law at Williams College before beginning his political career. He served in the New York State Senate and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1833, where he became known for his strong opposition to slavery and his frequent clashes with John C. Calhoun. A vocal critic of President Van Buren, he played a key role in turning public sentiment against Van Buren’s re-election. In 1844, President Tyler appointed him Governor of the Wisconsin Territory.
