Huge Rare Detroit Robert Hopkin Marine Nautical Exhibition Painting 44"The Pilot

Up for consideration is an historical significant and exceedlingly rare exhibition marine painting by important Detroit Artist Robert Hopkin (1832-1909). The painting without the frame measures a whopping 44 by 32 inches with overall dimensions being somewhere around 58 by 46 inches... The mounted overhanging Picture light has interior mirrored walls and for the record 4 light sockets ! The painting is so large that the picture light looks relatively normal in scale (24 inches in length). However when viewed in picture 3 one clearly sees the magnitude of this work of art. It dates presumably from about 1903 and is titled and signed again by Hopkin on verso "The Pilot Off Moville Ireland".  It is listed as "The Pilot" on the exhibition label. Hence this supports the fact that this exact painting was part of the 8th Annual Society of Western Artists" exhibition  as exhibit no 81 during the Year 1903-04 and in the art world that really means something...Please see photos of the catalog with Hopkins name. As one of the means to this end the Society gathers together annually, a collection of representative works chiefly produced in the Middle West, and exhibits the collection in various cities. During the year 1903-'04 the collection will be exhibited in turn in Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Columbus.    The painting depicts a skiff out in a blustery storm with both seagulls and men in a complex mix of color light and atmospheric drizzle. It is in short very good...exceedlingly large well documented piece with primary supporting documentation. This was chosen by the artist Robert Hopkins as the most representational of his best work during that time to travel throughout the Midwest on Exhibition. Paintings as such are extremely important and represent the best of the best of the artist...It doesnt really get much better than that.
