Description
Up for consideration is fine old mid 19th Century 3/4 bust portrait by listed San Francisco artist Frederick Wenderoth 1819-1884. The painting appears in an oval frame but is actually rectangular 10.5 x 13 inches with overall approximate dimensions of the frame being approximately17 by 19. It is signed "F.A.Wenderoth 1858". Wenderoth came to NY early on as an Immigrant of which he studied in NY and moved to California during the Gold Rush. He set up San Francisco and later on moved back to NY where he stayed for the duration of his time. His works are rare and are of great interest to collectors here and abroad. Biography: Born in Kassel, Germany in 1819, the son of painter Carl Wenderoth. Frederick was a pupil of his father from an early age and later studied at the Kassel Academy. Accompanied by Charles Christian Nahl and family, he moved to Paris in 1846 and in 1849 sailed to NYC. While living in the home of artist Louis Nagel, he had successful exhibitions at the American Art Union which provided him with the funds for further travel. In 1851 he and the Nahl family made the arduous trek across the Isthmus of Panama to California in search of gold. After a brief try at mining, they settled in Sacramento into a studio-home on Fourth Street. There they produced engravings for the local newspaper until a fire destroyed their studio in 1852. Wenderoth and the Nahls then moved to San Francisco into a studio on the corner of Sacramento and Kearny streets where he worked as a daguerrotypist. In 1856 he married Laura Nahl and moved to Philadelphia; the following year his wife and newborn child died. Wenderoth remained there and was successful as a photographer and painter until his death of tuberculosis in 1884. An excellent portraitist as well as genre, animal, and landscape painter, his works are rare. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1857, 1858. In: Oakland Museum; NMAA.
