Rare Study Mural Detroit Free Press Roy Gamble Scarab Club Cadillac Painting 1/2

Up for consideration is an historical significant and exceedlingly early rare study {1of2 being offered} of Murals that were commissioned for the Detroit Free Press by the artist Roy C. Gamble of Detroit Michigan Ca.1912. The view being 23 by 11.25 inches and the actual paper overall dimensions being 25 by 16. This study is almost identical to what is now Wayne State University Art Collection and is titled "The Landing of Cadillac" { We are offering another study titled the "Cadillac Landing" which is also being sold separately. According to archives this commission was presented to Gamble by  E.D. Stair through the help of Arthur Jaegar in around 1912. Gamble had just came back from Europe and had just set up in Detroit as a very young artist of which this commission  literally launched his career. By 1914 Gamble began taking on work as a portraitist. He was soon commissioned by Detroit Free Press owner E.D. Stair to paint five murals for the Detroit Free Press Building. Each mural depicted a separate scene illustrating Detroit's history including 'The Landing of Cadillac', 'Bartering with Indians', 'Pontiac's Conspiracy', 'Conquering the Forest', and 'Modern Industry'.[38]  A sixth panel, a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, utilized artist Joseph Siffred Duplessis' painting as a reference.[39] Gamble traveled to Walpole Island, Ontario to find models for the Native Americans depicted.[40] The murals, painted  in broad brushstrokes with an unabashed pallette illustrate Detroit's founding with great revere. The skillfully placed figures are washed in golden light. Cool waters and blue sky draw the viewer's eye beyond the figures and deep into the natural frontier. Stair so loved the finish murals that when the paper relocated in 1924 he requested architect Albert Kahn design a special room to display his work.   This work depicted is the study held by Wayne State University Art Collection which striking similar to the study being offered there is some slight variations including the rosary not hanging down along the priests robe...etc.  No doubt done by the hand of Roy C. Gamble.  There are 2 photos included of the second painting which is titled Cadillac landing on the verso of which was probably a variation that never got past the study stage...and in fact the actual landing of Cadillac Mural done by Gamble was even quite different then the studies...
