ShopifyThe Axum Obelisks are monumental granite stelae raised as funerary markers for Aksumite rulers, mainly during the 3rd and 4th centuries CE. Their carved false doors and rows of windows imitate multi-storey buildings. The standing Obelisk of Axum is about 24 metres high; taken to Rome in 1937, it was returned to Ethiopia in 2005 and re-erected in 2008. The wider Aksum archaeological site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. Coordinates: 14.1300° N, 38.7195° E.
