ShopifyThe Blue Nile Falls, known locally as Tis Issat or “smoking water”, lie on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region, about 30 kilometres downstream from Lake Tana. The river drops roughly 40 metres over a broad basalt ledge, producing heavy spray and seasonal rainbows when water levels are high. Flow varies considerably between the rainy and dry seasons and is also affected by hydroelectric diversion. The falls are commonly reached from nearby Bahir Dar. Coordinates: 11.4901° N, 37.5878° E.
