These are the Symbols of the Twelve Tribes of Israel which are traditionally based on the blessings of Jacob and Moses as described in Genesis chapter XLIX and Deuteronomy, chapter XXXIII Reuben - Symbol: MANDRAKES - "Thou art my firstborn, my might and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power ?" (Genesis chapter XLIX verses 3 & 4) Simeon - Symbol: CITY OF SHECHEM - "Simeon and Levi are brethren, instruments of cruelty? for in their anger they slew a man and in their self-will they dug down a wall" (Genesis chapter XLIX verses 5-7) Levi - Symbol: BREASTPLATE - "Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be thy holy one" Deuteronomy, chapter XXXIII Judah - Symbol: LION - "Thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise ?..Judah is a lion's whelp?"
