10 Vtg Florentine Motif Floral Bird Gilt Lacquer Japan Paper Mache Trays Barware

Set of 10, vintage, lacquered paper mache drink/cocktail trays with decoupaged floral and bird chintz print and edges trimmed in gold leaf. Each tray measures 8 3/8" long by 5 1/4" wide by 1/2" high on the edges. These trays were produced in Japan during the mid century moddern period by a variety of producers ( these by BP Import Products - see original label on trays) for the international market. A special lacquer process was used to make these trays "Alcohol Proof" so the finish would not be damaged by spills of alcohol while being used and allowed the trays to be used again and again. Trays were produced in a wide variety of styles with painted motifs, decoupage and prints ranging from Americana to these Florentine-inspired ones. Although these trays show wear, the distressing suits the Florentine styling. See photos for details on flaking of gold trims, wear on face of trays and spotting on white back sides. One tray has a tear in one of the edges as shown. Great set for a bar, for serving a group espresso or small treats or use as catchalls in a closet, bath or on a desk.
