Set of 2, vintage 1980s, Sasaki Coronation pattern, smoke grey goblet and clear twisted stem Water or Cocktail Glasses. These elegant glasses measure 4 3/4" high and 2 3/4" in diameter across the top. They are well balanced and made of high quality, durable glassware from special processes developed by the company in the mid 20th century. This is a discontinued pattern. Sasaki, which merged with Toyo Glassworks in 2002, still produces glassware for the home and hospitality industry in addition to glass products for industrial use. See below for notes on the company and its glassware. A handsome pair of glasses to outfit a bar for cocktails or to expand an existing set to serve a larger party for the holidays!

Notes on Sasaki Glass: In 1902, in the early times of Japan's glass industry, Sojiro Sasaki established his own glass shop in Kanda, Tokyo, primarily wholesaling oil lamps, which were growing in popularity around the world. By the next year, Sasaki's glass shop began to export lamps to Hawaii, China, and Southeast Asia as well as creating a wholesale sales network in Japan. AS gas and electric lamps began to take over the markets, Sasaki shifted its focus to production of household glassware. Business grew and in 1917, Sasaki opened his own glass production facility and began to sell directly to consumers. 1929,Sasaki Glass developed special imprinting inks for glassware, which were applied to the glassware by hand. By 1931, the company produced overlay colored glassware by mass production, offering quality similar to European ones but with lower price and eventually exporting its beautiful overlay glassware to the U.S. In 1967, Sasaki developed its HS series glass, Japan's first commercialized glass-rim toughened glassware. The safety, quality, and value made HS the top brand in the hospitality and food service industries. Sasaki merged with Japan's other major glass producer, Toyo, in 2002, and the combined companies continue to produce glass across industries and are known for their high quality products.
