Vintage 1980, Italian, signed Original Oil on Canvas Painting of a town street scene framed in a deep gilt frame. This quiet scene is a view to the tower of the San Giovanni Battista Church in the Italian Riviera town of Sestri Levante in the Liguria region of Italy. The low light and dark sky shows the late day marine layer that is typical of the area with just enough sunlight coming through to light up the stucco facades of the town houses as well as the church tower with its clock and open belfry. The sketch-like rendering of the street light wires lend another geometric element to the perspective in this painting. Notice a little bike in the lower right that brings the viewer into the picture before sending the eye down the street to the square and bell tower. The painting is signed on the lower left (unknown signature) with "80" indicating the date of this painting: 1980. The back of the frame is sealed with wrapping paper typical of handmade Italian housewares that has furniture accents printed in gold on a burgundy background paper. In pencil on the upper right is written in classical Italian printed hand " Chiavari 1987 von Sestri Levante" and "50'000 Lira" written on the lower left, also in pencil. Possibly a souvenir from travels of a Swiss or Germanic person or perhaps a gift reminder of a stay in the Riviera in Chiavari or Sestri Levante, as the word "von" (German for "from") was used on the note on the back. Found at a flea market in Switzerland. At the outside edges of the framed painting measures 9 3/8" high 7 3/8" wide and 2" deep and the picture inside is 7 3/8" high by 5 3/8" wide. The painting is in excellent condition. There is some wear on the gilt frame, especially on the lower right and lower left side outer edges where the red ground is exposed and a small scratch on the right side which shows the underlying gesso - see photos for details. A nice little painting for a quiet corner or to warm up a gallery wall with lovely, impressionist style and technique that allows the viewer to sense the quiet and feel the warmth of the Italian sun.
