Antique, victorian Belgian tapestry table mat with metallic gold lace trim and sage green moire fabric lining on back. This piece measures 14" (35.5cm) by 6 7/8" (17.4cm). The tapestry motif is done in a baroque style and features a pair of love birds on the left and a bouquet of roses, a lily and some smaller dark pink flowers on the right. These table mats were popular from the 1860 until after WW2, especially in European homes to protect vulnerable french polish on furniture and before coasters and glass became popular as protection. Many table mats can be found in lace and crochet but these tapestry pieces with the distinctive metallic lace were produced in Belgium along with other intricate Belgian lace items. In very good condition - see photos - note: the photo of the back makes it look like there is some fading in the fabric but there is not, it is a reflection made by the texture of the moire. A lovely item for table, dresser or framed as wall art.
