The candlestick has its original brass beboche or wax drip catcher and candle socket liner. The base has been carved with a circular well that is integrated into the moulding of the base to catch wax drips from burning candles. A handsome candlestick with a traditional Jacobean design for an everyday table, a mantel or shelf. (See our other listings for more barley twist pieces for your home.)

NOTES on Barley Twist:

The Barley Twist design was first popularized in Spain in the 15th century. Wood was soaked and heated and then twisted around a central line or column. In the case of the open design, the wood had to be cut and carved to create the two pieces that would make up the parallel twists. In the 17th century, the design had faded in popularity, only to be revived again the the 19th century in England, where wood workers incorporated the design into not only candlesticks but tables, chairs, cabinetry and more, using it as a dominant accent as well as in combination with other carved details. Barley twist designs have become a standard in traditional design since and have been reintroduced in interior furnishings again and again, making it a classic.
