Description
Pair of antique English oak, barley twist Candlesticks with original metal weights on bases. This pair of candleholders measures 11" high and have bases that are 5 1/8" in diameter. The mixed white metal weights are integrated into the center of the wood bases to keep these candlesticks sturdy. Candle sockets measure 7/8" across, which suits standard taper candles. The bases have been carved with circular wells that are integrated into the moulding of the bases to catch wax drips from burning candles. Metal candle socket liners are recommended for these holders to prevent heat or flame damage to the wooden candle sockets. These candlesticks are in very good condition, with patina from age - see photos for details. A handsome pair of candlesticks with a classic Jacobean design for an everyday table, a mantel or festive buffet. NOTES on Barley Twist:

The Barley Twist design was first popularized in Spain in the 15th century. Wood was soaked and heated and then twisted around a central line or column. In the case of the open design, the wood had to be cut and carved to create the two pieces that would make up the parallel twists. In the 17th century, the design had faded in popularity, only to be revived again the the 19th century in England, where wood workers incorporated the design into not only candlesticks but tables, chairs, cabinetry and more, using it as a dominant accent as well as in combination with other carved details. Barley twist designs have become a standard in traditional design since and have been reintroduced in interior furnishings again and again, making it a classic.
