Vintage, clear crystal Squirrel Figurine or Paperweight by Baccarat, a design now retired. This handsome seated squirrel, nibbling, is a wonderful example of the sensitive design of the animal sculptures produced by Baccarat in its facilities in France's Lorraine. Baccarat, known for its beautiful lead crystal vases, chandeliers, paperweights and perfume bottles already before the mid 1800s, produced its first animal sculptures in 1925 for the opening of the International Exhibition of Industrial and Decorative Arts in France. They were so popular that Baccarat began producing such figurines each year. This design dates to 1972 and was retired in 1999. Squirrels have symbolized resourcefulness, adaptability, playfulness, and organization and their presence has been a harbinger of change, a sign that one should be prepared and good luck in the process. This squirrel figurine measures 4 1/2" high, 2 3/4" wide and 1 1/8" deep and weighs 10.1 oz. Signed on the bottom with traditional etched Baccarat stamp.
