Description
Set of 4, vintage, silver rimmed cocktail glasses in the style of the "Roly Poly" design by Dorothy Thorpe (see below for notes on Thorpe). These bubble shaped, 1960s era glasses measure 2 1/4" high and 2 1/2" across the rim and have a band of polished silver metal around the rim, like the pieces in Thorpe's "Allegro" line, but 1/2" wide. Each glass holds a 4 oz. drink. These glasses are in very good condition, with only very slight silver loss on the edge of the silver band on one glass. Clean and ready to use. Hand wash only. A classic design, smart looking, which compliments a modern or traditional look.

Dorothy Thorpe, born in 1901 in Salt Lake City, moved to Los Angeles in her 20's. She started her studio and designs during the 1930s, purchasing existing American and European glassware and applying her own decorations, like several other designers of the period. In addition to selling her own designs, she later was designing pieces for several manufacturers such as Heisey and Tiffin. She is well known for her silver overlay, "Silver Band" line, and paint speckled pieces which included a wide variety of glassware sets with serving pieces. The silver overlay pieces were not signed and usually came with a sticker that bore her name. Also, glasses produced and sold  included the original "Silver Band" with sterling silver and later also the "Allegra" line, which had a silver metallic band that didn't tarnish. Due to the popularity of the silver overlay pieces, other companies, like Libbey and Queens Lusterware, produced similar designs of both her silver and Allegra pieces at a lower price point for a larger audience. Thorpe went on to design sandblasted glassware, speckled painted items and glass dishware. She died in 1989.
