Vintage 1970s, Original King, large German highly decorated and painted Beer Stein with pewter lid. This decorative souvenir mug, brought to the US from Germany in the 70s, is made of brightly hand painted and glazed molded ceramic with a scene of women and men sitting among casks sharing wine. This scene in high relief is surrounded by grape vines and leaves around the main section of the outside. Under the scene is an inscription " In Freud und Leid, Trink Alle Zeit" which is a cheeky expression that means "Drink in all times, good or bad" The lid is cast pewter with intricate designs in the surface and on the hinge that attaches the lid to the stein. This stein measures 15" high, 5 1/4" in diameter and 7" wide at the handle and weighs 3 lbs 12 oz. This stein, marked on the bottom and made by one of the traditional producers of steins in Bavaria, has never been used and kept in a closed cabinet so it is in very good condition with only minor tarnishing to the lid and no chips, breaks or cracks - see photos for details. A fun item to decorate a bar or to celebrate Oktoberfest or whenever calls for beer!
