Description
Vintage, late 1970s, silver plate Wine or Champagne Coaster with
moisture- and liquor-proof Formica Base. This coaster has a lovely, classic, 10-sided, mod silver plate flange around the top of the round rim and a round black formica base. The coaster measures 7 1/8" across and 1 3/8" high. The center measures 5 1/8" in diameter and is 1" deep. This item was designed and made by Sheffield Silver Co. , a Brooklyn-based producer of halloware that was established in 1908 and acquired by Reed & Barton in 1974. The Sheffield Silver operations were moved to Reed & Barton's Norton, MA location but continued to produce halloware under its original name, as shown on the brand sticker on the bottom of this piece. Many bar or cocktail serving pieces from the 1960s and '70s, such as this coaster, included practical Formica bases to protect furniture finishes that were susceptible to damage from moisture and alcohol and came in both faux wood finish as shown here as well as solid colors. This coaster is in good condition, with some wear spots as shown in photos, and has been cleaned to be ready for use. A great addition to a holiday table or bar and can also be practical for vanity or bathroom use for soap and lotion bottles.
