Vintage, mid century, studio art pottery, hand thrown ceramic bowl by Indiana ceramicist, Tim Mather. This piece from his slat glaze period in the early 1970s has a wide lip and blue drip glaze over charcoal unglazed exterior and a white glaze interior. Signed MATHER on the bottom. A fine example of art pottery that measures 9 1/2" (24.2 cm) in diameter across the top and is 4 1/4" (10.8 cm) high and weighs 2 lbs 15 oz (1 kg 318g). The thin lip curves slightly into the bowl. The glazes are matte in finish and speckled from the oxidation in the kiln. The blue is mottled with white and appears as an organic ,slightly grey-blue with some deeper areas. The white interior is a creamy white toned down by brown mottling from the oxidation process. The unglazed exterior is rough and the charcoal color fades to light brown clay color on the lower section of the side and on the bottom. The edge of the lip of the bowl is also rough and so it is hard to tell whether there are chips in the edge or if it is just intrinsic to the piece. See photos for details. A lovely shallow, broad bowl perfect for it sculptural effect alone or with fruit or flowers on a table or could be used for serving food at a meal (although it is some what heavy for this).
