Set of 6, vintage, Danish Modern, cast iron and brass candle holders designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk International. The simple and elegant design features a base in a angled 4-sided and tapered modern "S" shape and a slender cone-shaped holder. The iron is finished in a rough matte black surface with a small ring of brass between the two parts, which can be taken apart for cleaning or storage. "Denmark" embossed on the bottom "S" section. These candle holders measure 4 3/8" (11 cm) high, 4 3/8" (11 cm) wide and 2 1/8" (5.5 cm) deep. The opening for the candle measures 1/2" (1.2 cm) which accommodates what are considered "tiny tapers" (check dimensions when purchasing candles as some of the tiny tapers are much smaller than 1/2") which can be purchased through Williams Sonoma or by searching on ebay for vintage new ones. Jens Quistgaard was a Danish sculptor and designer, who developed his designs from his knowledge and work with traditional Danish craftsman, and his training as a sculptor and silversmith. He began his designs for kitchenware and tableware in the early 1950s, by designing cast iron cookware for which he received prizes in Italy. In 1954, he and was discovered by Ted Nierenberg who formed Dansk Designs with Quistgaard as chief designer. These candlesticks, along with many other items were fashioned during his most prolific period - 1954 through the 1960s. With more than 4000 designed items over his 30 year tenure at Dansk, Quistgaard became the principal designer responsible for what became to be known as "Danish Modern" design. His designs can be found on tables and in numerous museums all around the world including The Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum and the Louvre. A wonderful set in excellent condition that allows for numerous arrangements - see photos for suggestions - for everyday or a special occasion dining or to give a sculptural touch to a coffee table or entry.
