Vintage New, 1990s, unused, navy blue with white lettering, handled canvas shopping bag from the Berlin, Germany's grand luxury department store: KaDeWe. See below for the story of this wonderful store. This medium-weight cotton blend tote measures 15 1/4" wide and 16 3/4" high (21" high with handles) and has a 5 1/2" strap drop. This bag is new condition, ready to take shopping or to decorate a designer closet. A piece with interesting history and a luxury design statement.
Notes on the Store: KaDeWe is the short form of "Kaufhaus des Westens" ("Department Store of the West"), the second largest department store in Europe after Harrods in London with 60,000 square meters of retail space and more than 380,000 items for sale in their downtown Berlin store location. The luxury house started in 1907 by offering luxury products that were rare and unknown to Germans at the time such as Parisian designer runway collections and exotic fruit from the South Pacific. In addition, the store provided special services such as a rental library, elevators, paneled restrooms, big windows and light-filled sales halls. The business was taken over by the Nazis in 1933. The store incurred significant damage during WW2. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1960s, the store lost a significant number of employees and customers. Reconstruction efforts and an expansion were completed in 1978, re-establishing the store as on of Berlin's major city sights. At the fall of the Berlin WAll in 1989, record numbers of people returned to shop - almost 200,000 per day! KaDeWe underwent a major renovation starting in 2016, under the direction of designer Rem Koolhaas and other leading designers assigned to design and build specific parts of the store in order to attract modern audiences. Under this project, a kitchen store was added in 2018 and 2019 brought designer boutiques, restaurants, bars open until midnight, a toy department and a home store. The store continues to be a significant shopping hub in Germany.
