Description
Pair of vintage 1970s Kunstlerschutz-style squirrel figures in brown flocking with painted features, glass eyes and real fur tails (probably rabbit fur). Both squirrels are sitting on hind legs with clasped paws and facing left. Each figure measures 2 1/3" high and 2 3/4" wide. No manufacturers markings or stickers, though they would have been placed on the bottom side of these figures. Perfect for a miniature woodland scene or to add to a collection of such special collectables.
Kunstlerschutz was a process related to the long German history of creating animal figurines from wood, plaster, clay and papermache and then covering them with wool/flocking to create quality toys and figurines for Christmas nativity and village scenes. These squirrels are a part of the a time of organized production of such animals in Germany between 1940-1970s which was lead by the Wagner Handwork Company (Rodental, Germany) and included activities of several other producers as well. These companies made more than 500,000 of these figures each year. These carefully made figures are paper and clay based items formed in molds, were flocked and then painted with details and eyes, antlers, etc. applied by hand. Such figures became a part of the charm of German Christmas decorations as well as part of the popular miniature scenes/diaoramas loved at all times of year by children and adults alike for decades.
