Vintage, large, Italian, oval, inlaid wood Jewelry Box with 2 drawers and integrated Reuge Music Box. The No. 6255 music box from Reuge "Romance" line plays the "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers, produced 1963-1975 (see below notes for details). This tall, unusual, oval-shaped box is produced in classic Sorrento marquetry style with light, unstained wood sprays of long-stemmed roses and leaves on a rose-pink stained, burled wood background and black-laquered moulding around the top and bottom. The lid opens on a brass hinge to reveal a light pink, velvet lined interior. Two rounded drawers with brass hinged drop loop knobs open from the front to reveal the same lining to store jewelry. The box measures 6 3/4" (17cm) tall, 11 1/4" (28.4cm) wide and 7 1/4" (16.2cm) deep. The top interior is 9 1/2" (24cm) by 5 1/2" (13.8cm). The top drawer measures 7 1/4"(16.2cm) wide with about 4"(10cm) in depth inside and the other one with about 2" (5cm) depth inside - shorter to accommodate the compartment that houses the music box. Overall, this box is in lovely condition but shows some use and wear as shown in photos. Clean and ready to use or give as a gift.

Notes: The Reuge Music Box company of Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, famous for its mechanical music movements, started its "Romance" line of movements in the early 1980s to expand its markets and allow other cabinet manufacturers to use Reuge movements in their boxes and to differentiate them from the Reuge factory originals. These Romance movements are identical to the original movements except for the engraved name on the main spring and on the wind-up key. This Sorrento, Italy style box is one of those that was produced using the new movements. Marquetry work such as the work found in this hand made box, has been a well established craft in Sorrento and some other small centers in Italy and has been used for centuries to create highly decorated furniture and accessories using many different, both common and rare types of wood and other materials. Such work requires not only fine hand working of small pieces of wood veneer which are cut out and reassembled to create patterns, but require careful design, planning and preparation of the wood components and precise finishing to create the gloss lacquer finish. There are a number of small shops that produced cases and boxes using this line and often did not mark their work but let the Reuge brand and Made in Italy marking to show its authenticity and origins of production.
