Vintage large Maitland-Smith Chinoiserie Crackle Painted Gilt Lacquered Box

Vintage 1980s, Maitland-Smith large decorative chinoiserie style storage box with hinged lid and brass feet. This octagonal wood box has a black lacquered background that is finished with layers of paint, gilding and lacquer using Old World techniques for which Maitland-Smith is known. The intricate layers include red and gold raised animal characters, floral motifs, gold leafed, antiqued and distressed accents all topped off with a deep crackle finish that is leather-like to the touch. The lid opens with antiques brass hinges and a matching support hinge. The bun feet are also antiqued brass. This 16" wide, 11" deep and 7" high box makes a lovely accent or makes a stunning and useful addition to an office, library or dining space to store supplies. Please note that this item was created to have an intentional distressed and crackled finish in the lacquer and painted decorative surfaces and is in very good condition with no use damage apparent to those surfaces. Slight corrosion in the edges of the brass feet where the clear protective lacquer has peeled back slightly. The interior shows some wear to the finish on the black painted bottom and some light distressing to the smooth exterior bottom of the box.
