Description
Vintage Mid-Century Cholla Cactus Lamp with handmade wood and leather-laced shade. This working lamp has one socket for a standard incandescent bulb with a press through switch. The base is made of hand collected and dried cholla cactus branches sitting on a diagonally sliced piece of a large cholla branch. Lamp measures 14" high by 11" wide by 6 5/8" deep. The clip-on (to bulb) trapezoidal shade is made of 1/4" plywood pieces, held together by leather laces. The shade alone measures 6" square on top, 6 5/8" square on the bottom and 6 5/8" high.
These charming lamps were created by Cactus Craft of Tuscon, Arizona which started making these in the 1940s and sold them through curio shops and departments stores such as Woolworths through the 50s and 60s first as fully assembled lamps then later as kits. Lamps sold for $3 to $20. To make the lamp bases, cholla was collected, cleaned with chlorine and water and dried outside then fashioned into various bases and parts for kits. Complete lamps often came with shades that had scenes of famous tourist sites around the country but kit-made lamps were found with a variety of manufactured shades and handmade shades, of which this is one. The company went out of business in the late 70s, making these lamps charming period pieces.
This lamp is clean and in very good condition - see photos for details. Wonderful, whimsical accent to a range of interior styles and just the size for a nightstand or small desk.
