Description
Vintage, hand painted and carved wood light green lidded Ring or Trinket Box decorated with carved and painted wood Fly Agaric mushrooms. (Fly agaric mushrooms, which appear under trees, mostly firs and spruces, leading up to the winter solstice, have been associated with winter solstice celebrations and ceremonies in European and Asian cultures for centuries. The mushrooms carry intoxicating chemicals which were used for hallucinogenic and warming qualities at this cold time of year. They were dried by a hearth and later became integrated into the secular celebrations of the holidays at that time of year, especially Christmas in Europe.)  This adorable German box is from Erzgebirge region (known for its hand carved and painted figurines and decorations) and in the style of classic Wendt & Kuhn figurines, but has no markings or labels. The bottom is a round, 3 footed "cup", large enough to hold several rings. The top sits well on the curved edge of the bottom and is decorated with 3 mushrooms growing on a bed of moss. The whole box is painted early 20th century green with small red petaled flowers with white centers and green leaves around the outside. This box measures 2" high and 2 1/4" in diameter on the outside and 1 3/4" in the inside (where the rings go). In very good condition - see photos for details. An adorable box for giving a romantic gift - especially during the holidays - or to store rings on a vanity or night stand.
