Description
Unusual, vintage Majolica Lidded Serving Dish/Tureen painted like and in the shape of a bunch of White Asparagus tied with lime green ribbons. (As White asparagus is a delicacy in some northern European countries, and is rarely available here in the US, such items appear less frequently here as well.) This richly hand painted and glazed clay pottery container measures 8" (20.2cm) wide, 5 " (12.7cm) deep and 5.5" (13.9cm) high including the integrated handle of the lid (in the shape of a bent stalk of asparagus). This newer majolica dish dates from the 1980s and is marked "Made in Portugal" on the bottom and carries vibrant, pastel colors of the time. Although this may be used for serving, it has been used only for storage and decor in a colorful kitchen and therefore has felt feet on the bottom to keep from scratching.  In good condition, with only very small chip at the bottom edge of one of the spears of asparagus on one side and some light crazing - see photos for details. Majolica of all ages has always brought a charm and nod to nature and this beautifully crafted tureen is no exception with its natural, spring-like color that adds charm to serving a meal, storing small items on a shelf or decorating a table.
