Vtg Modern Crystal Owl Art Glass Paperweight Sculpture Xavier Melendez Mexico

Vintage 1970s, cast and etched clear crystal owl paperweight or sculptural figurine by Mexican sculptor Xavier Melendez. This unique and witty figurine achieves the look of its wide eyes through the use of optical refraction in the glass - visible light is bent toward the viewer through  angled lenses in the front which serve as the eye openings by bouncing off a divot molded into the back of the sphere near the bottom. The artist used etching and polishing of the out surfaces to create this modern stylized owl figure. This figure is a flat bottomed 3" (7.5 cm) sphere that weighs 1 lb 6 oz (702 g). In excellent condition with etched signature on the bottom. Xavier Melendez, born in 1937 in Torreon, Mexico, got his degree in architecture at the Technical Institute in Monterrey where he also taught for 5 years. He began his industrial design career in 1969 and created sculpture in glass, displaying pieces at more than 60 exhibitions both in Mexico and elsewhere. He is known for his abstract clear crystal sculptures. This paperweight shows off his command of technique, creativity and sense of humor. A fun piece that brings a smile! Great for a desk, shelf or coffee table vignette or on its own.
