Description

Vintage hand-painted porcelain mantel clock in the Dresden Rococo taste, made in Western Germany, c. 1955–1965.

White porcelain case with moulded scrollwork, gilt rocaille cresting and shell apron, sepia-and-gold floral sprays (roses and blossoms) to the front, sides and shoulders, raised on four splayed cabriole feet with four turned brass finials. Domed bevelled glass bezel over a white enamel dial with black Roman hours, outer Arabic minute track, pierced gilt scrolled hands, and the crowned N / “Dresden” trademark to the centre. Original winding key included.

Marked on the underside in underglaze blue with the crowned N over “Dresden” and “handgemalt” (hand painted), plus the blue “Made in Western Germany” stamp. The original German factory label inside the back plate notes that these case clocks are handmade and small variations in the porcelain are inherent to the process.

Condition — please read: The timekeeping train runs and keeps time when wound. The strike/chime train does not function and is sold as-is; a clockmaker’s service would likely sort it. Porcelain presents very well with no chips, cracks or hairlines noted — light gilt wear consistent with age, some minor manufacturing irregularity in the porcelain as described on the factory label. Please review all photos, as they form part of the description.
