Please take a moment to read below: Please note that these gemstones are diffused, which is a form of gemstone treatment. With diffusion treatment, it is common to see hairline fractures to the surface of the gemstone. I will not go into detail here about what diffusion is and how it works. Please refer to the GIA for details about this. There may (sometimes, not always) be cavities present on the back of the star sapphire. These cavities are the result of exsolved hematite at the basal parting and is very common. Just to clarify, this is not damage to the gemstone. There are three ways that this is dealt with. (a) Sanding down the bottom further to smooth out the cavity, which often results in destroying the star effect in the gemstone. (b) Filling the cavity with a resin, which results in a significant variance in the carat weight of the gemstone, thus resulting in the customer paying significantly more per carat. (c) Ignoring the cavity. In most situations where a cabochon is used, it is being set into a bezel type setting and the cavity will not be an issue. This is my preferred method as ripping off my customer with significantly higher prices is not an option (I don't like losing sleep over guilty feelings). If you have a setting that will expose the bottom of the gemstone, please notify me (before buying) to be sure I can provide one that best suits your situation. Often but not always, the gemstone's, bottom is rounded a little (or the leg height can be more extreme) because the cavity was able to be removed without destroying the star effect. Often, but not always, the gemstone will be low dome. It is important to communicate any restrictions (before buying) that you may have with your setting so I can best meet your needs and avoid disappointment.
