Original Canadian Oil Painting – Northern Landscape

Original oil painting on wood panel attributed to listed Canadian artist Sydney Berne (1921–2013), depicting a rugged northern landscape with water, exposed timber, slender bare trees and distant hills.

The painting has a particularly atmospheric quality, with Berne using muted violet, blue, ochre, green and earth tones to capture the quiet character of the Canadian landscape. The composition is dominated by tall skeletal trees rising above the water and forest, with loosely handled reflections and logs creating movement across the foreground.

Berne was born in Toronto in 1921 and studied at Central Technical School, where his instructors included Canadian artists Peter Haworth and Carl Schaefer. After serving during the Second World War, he studied in Paris before returning to Canada and settling in Montreal. He became particularly known for landscapes, seascapes and urban scenes, including views inspired by Quebec and the Laurentian region.
