Up for consideration is a fine Old Painting by listed Michigan Florida and Belgium Artist Hanny Blacquiere Van Der Velde (1883-1959) born in Rotterdam :Holland Passed away in Royal Michigan. She is known for floral Still life paintings as well as landscapes. This particular painting measurs 26.5 by 30.5 inches not including the frame with overall dimensions being 34 by 39 inches. It signed in the lower right...and is titled "Breda Holland" on the back. The piece is very well done and looks to be one of his better works...incorporating the famous view along the canal in Breda including some local Architecture. It really has a wonderful palette so characteristic of the 1930's soft pastels. It really is quite well done. The painting is from a super clean nonsmokers estate. No repairs or issues of any kind... please see photos as part of the description. If you have any questions or something to share please feel free to contact me. Buyer pays shipping. In 1910 she migrated to the United States. A Detroit News article dated May 26,1929, states, “Since coming to the United States in 1910 she has worked independently and has developed a style which carries the stamp of her own individuality . . . Before coming to this country she enjoyed generous recognition in Holland where she was a frequent exhibitor.” She was wife and mother of six children who chose to paint the scenes in and around her home so art would not interfere with her home life. Another article reads, “For subjects, Mrs.Vander Velde does not go far a field but delights in the woodlands and lakes that lie near Detroit.” According to Mrs. Vander Velde, quoted in an article found in the Detroit Public Library Main Branch Fine Arts Clippings, “A true artist never paints for money. He paints because he is inspired. A painter who works hard to catch the fast fleeing glories will always produce a good painting.” She studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and was a member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. Her exhibitions included the Michigan State Show, Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Grand Rapids Art Association. Her paintings are in the Vanderpoel Collection in Chicago, the Women’s League Building on the University of Michigan Campus, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and many Detroit Schools.
