0530----1890 EVAN JONES SLATINGTON PA LEHIGH COUNTY SLATE QUARRY DEATH LETTER Original 1890 letter of Slatington PA concerning the death of slate quarryman (Evan E. Nolf."  He is writing to Justice of the Peace "Alexander Peter" of Washington Twp., Lehigh County PA.   As for Mr. Nolf, this is the very well known "Amandes C. Nolf" long time resident of Slatington who has also served as JP, in addition to being a civic leader, teacher, and merchant.  Mentioned in the letter is  "Williams & Son" who operated the quarry.       The wife of the deceased Evan Jones was very ill at the time and passed only 4 weeks after her husband, leaving 7 orphaned children. The letter is one-page, EX condition and transcribed below.   Materials and images used in research are for review only, and NOT included with the item for sale in this listing. Slatington Pa 2/8 1890  Alex. Peter Esq.    My Dear Sir                 The bearer of this note have been with me in reference to obtaining  a little aid from the Poor House I told them I did not think they could get any more than perhaps seven dollars allowed in such cases as follows Evan E. Jones was killed by accident in the slate quarry operated by Ewen F. Williams & Son  at Williamstown this morning and his family is in great distress wife is sick in bed close to confinement and has seven children and no means to support them he was an honest upright and sober man and therefore I think it is no more than right and proper to apply to the Poor Directors for some aid to help defray the expense   to bury the said deceased.    Yours Respectfully.  A.C Nolf * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
