0535----1813 ELEAZER LINDSLEY LETTER FROM WM HONAY - LINDSLEY NY PAINTED POST Original letter to Eleazer Lindsley of Steuben County NY, 1813 from William Honay of Manhattan, Jan 13, 1813 to well known resident of Steuben County, Eleazer Lindsley. Content includes a request that Lindsley try to get money owed to Honay from "Bradley Campbell." Apparently Bradley owed him between $90-100, a large amount in this time. It appears that both Lindsley + Honay are familiar with Mr. Campbell and his mother, who is ill. Lindsley was a long time resident and civic leader in Painted Post, Lindley (or Lindsleytown or Lindsley). Interestingly, when checking the 1810 census, there is a Campbell family listed next to Lindsley. We have transcribed the full letter below, with some minor spelling corrections, and a few question marks when needed. New York Jan'y 16 1813 My Dear Sir, I had the pleasure of receiving yours of the 1st and am truly happy to hear of all your good health while I feel sorry for poor Mrs Campble (Campbell) who I always ??? as a very worthy woman. Hir (her) son Bradley is a poor unfortunate young man and much of his misfortune has been in consequence of his unhappy marriage. I for bare saying any thing more at present.  Bradley owes me between ninety and one hundred dollars cash lent which he has had it upwards of three years - I should very much like to know whether Bradley will have any thing coming at the death of his mother.  I have Bradley's friend when he had no other (at least here).  Should he have it in his power & neglect to return those favors he would not only be the most unjust but the most ungrateful of all men + taking all things into consideration. I shall take it as a favor of you would let me know how Bradley affairs stand at home.  My sir I shall ever obtain a grateful service of your goodness in obtaining + sending me the money.  ????? Since I wrote you last time (page 2) has in some measure ?? in the City - the arrival of the dispatches to our government has caused a great sickness and disease among our speculators.  Some are dangerously ill while others are no more.  It is said and generally believed that there five hundred thousand dollars sank in two weeks (by those good friends of the country) principle on the articles of sugar, tea + coffee.   It's all peace here now and it to be the pray(er) of every hones(t) citizen that it may continue so to remain until there is a  lasting + permanent peace concluded on between the two nations.  Sugar has been up to 40$ per hundred  coffee at 45 cents + teas in the same proportion - but now the same sugar is dealing at 18$ + coffee 25 cents - As to the situation of the inhabitants on our northern ?? I feel truly to lament their distressed case which has been brought on them by hourd treachery on the mismanagement of our leading men - there lies an awful responsibility some where - I and my little family remain very healthy except our little daughter who has got the (w)hooping cough thing.  She is getting the better of it fast - ??? joins me in love and due respect to your self + Lady together with all your family.  I ??? me + ??? your sincere friend.   Wm.
