1109----MEADVILLE PA 1854-1870 JOHN D. CLEMSON MERCHANT LEDGERS This is a collection of three ledgers from the well known merchant, John Clemson of Meadville PA. Acquired at an auction in Meadville in early 2022. The books cover the transactions with townspeople from 1854-1870. John Clemson (1831-1903) was a long time business man in Meadville. Besides the grocery, hardware, and supply business, he was also listed in census records as a blacksmith, and according to the 1860 census a "Master Blacksmith." He apparently lived and ran his business on Arch Street, and eventually was in business with a man named "Culbertson." I have counted over 1000 pages which thousands and thousands of entries. The books are in good condition considering their age. Very legible and without major issues such as tears, stains, etc. The covers are in various conditions but are intact and have protected the pages. One important name noticed was the famous "William Reynolds" and positive there are numerous other citizens, perhaps most of them involved in the oil business. Other familiar names appear to be Shryrock, Huidekoper, Hiram Steel, Minnis, Best, others. Preview 68 images of the books below.
