2182----1882-83 PORTSMOUTH OHIO ADAM HAMM FAMILY/STORE CABINET PHOTO GALLIA STR Rare cabinet photo of a family standing in front of their father's tailor shop in Portsmouth OH. This is the tailor shop operated by longtime Portsmouth resident, Adam Hamm. Mr Hamm is even holding a pair of shears and I think I see some material or possibly a suit hanging in the background. He is standing in front with his children:  Wesley, Arthur, Nellie, and Clara. The fifth child was identified as a "neighbor" wearing the cool hat on the far right. The names are penciled at the bottom of the photo and the address of "27 Gallia St, Portsmouth" is on reverse." I was able to find the family in the 1880 census to confirm. The names of the children, Adam's occupation, and EVEN the address all are here. Based on Nellie's age printed on the photo as "3 years old" I can even confirm the year of this photo as 1882 or 1883.   The census has her birthday as "Aug" (1879) Materials and images used in research are for review only, and NOT included with the item for sale in this listing. ABOUT ADAM HAMM  Adam Hamm was born in Hesse-Darmstadt Germany in 1832, arrived in Portsmouth OH in 1854 and married Anna Mary Emrich in 1860.  Together they had 9 children, two died in infancy.  The seven surviving children were Amelia, Ella, Emma, Clara, Wesley, Arthur, and Nellie.  Adam was a tailor on Gallia Street for over 30 years, until retiring to Columbus OH around 1902 to live with his daughter.  His wife died in 1897 and Adam died in 1910 (see obits).    The photo is in good condition.  It does have a horizontal crease and a small tear at the bottom.  I also notice a little scuffing under the names. The image is kind of light and somewhat blurred.   The only part of the sign which is readable is "Hamm" and "tailor." Size of this cabinet photo is 4-1/8 x 6-1/2. * * * * * * * * * *
