Pair of vintage brutalist design copper Bookends hand made by Schaefer, a German metal crafting studio, with round cutouts and high-relief weld clusters on a smooth, antiqued satin surface. Georg Schaefer founded his namesake high end wrought iron and art studio in 1908. By 1945, his son Georg, Jr. took over the operation and expanded it to include mixed-media pieces including brass, copper and pieces and inlays in traditional works as well as shifting to textured MCM and brutalist elements in his work. The design of these bookends is classic postwar Schaefer design with the holes, raised details and patinated and oxidized finish. Schaefer work is highly regarded due to the quality and intentionality of these elements in their designs and have made their pieces highly collectible. These bookends measure 6 3/4" high, 4" wide and 3 1/8" deep. The "Schaefer" and droplet mark are incised in the bottoms together with "handarbeit" (means hand made). In very good condition with a few places where the edges are slightly bent, which may be original from the hammering work - see photos for details. A handsome, design-forward pair of bookends with an organic modern feel to hold a favorite collection of books on a desk or bedside.
