Up for consideration is a fine Antique hand painted KPM signed porcelain
portrait plaque by Wagner after a famous painting by Christian Seybold (1697-1768) labeled "Portrait of Elderly Woman". The painting was retailed by Bailey Banks and Biddle as it is stamped on the back. The piece sports the KPM embossed mark along with signature by Wagner on the lower left on the front. The painting itself measures 7.75 inches by 10.5 inches with the overall dimensions of frame being 18 by 20 inches. This painting is absolutely incredible and to say the least well done. In the Art World more or less this type of painting is considered a "Tronie" A Tronie is a type of work that was common in Dutch Golden Age painting and Flemish Baroque painting that depicts an exaggerated or characteristic facial expression. These works were not intended as portraits or caricatures but as studies of expression, type, physiognomy or an interesting character such as an old man or woman, a young woman, the soldier, the shepherdess, the Oriental, or a person of a particular race. The main goal of the artists who created tronies was to achieve a lifelike representation of the figures and to show off their illusionistic abilities through the free use of color, strong light contrasts, or a peculiar color scheme. Tronies conveyed different meanings and values to their viewers. Tronies embodied abstract notions such as transience, youth, and old age, but could also function as positive or negative examples of human qualities, such as wisdom, strength, piety, folly, or impulsiveness. These works were very popular in Holland and Flanders and were produced as independent works for the free market. Special thanks to Wiki... This is really the best of the best when it comes to quality it just doesn't get any better. This is a wonderfully graceful elderly woman with a fur scarf and depicts a genre of painting that is quite often overlooked. It takes great skill to accomplish a work of art as such. Please see photos as part of the description. If you have any questions or something to share please message me...Buyer pays shipping. Please note I purchased quite a few porcelain plaques all of which will be listed over the weekend. Enjoy your weekend ! Best Regards,JohnJohnnyCrystal Est. 1987
