Up for consideration is a pair of 19th Century Gothic Hand Wrought Iron Spanish
Revival Figural Basket Candle top Andirons in the form a stylized Dragon or Monitor Lizard. They stand about 27.75 inches with a width of about 14 inches and a depth of around 13 inches. The basket tops are quite intricate and quite complicated...they are a bit out of round and are about 5 inches in diameter. The basket tops may have held candles in the off season or were used as planters during the summer time...I have also heard of liners being used and water added so that the area within could be humidified. The bottom shows wide legs with webbed and clawed feet with the horizontal body that has body lines and scales worked into the design to add sense of realism. The mouth holds a a ring. These are quite interesting and for the most are hard to really classify stylistically...They are most definitely from the Victorian era...and cross the Spanish Revival and early California design...Gothic with dragon motifs coupled with the use dark coloration and hand wrought primitive styling in iron, furthermore Italian Renaissance Revival which also incorporated Gargoyles Iron etc...in scrolling design... One does not have to confine these the fireplace and they would make interesting candles stands...side table bases , or even planters...and of course not limited to that...if you have any questions or something to share please feel free to message me.
