Description
Set of 2, large matching vintage pressed cardboard German Christmas Cookie Plates in mid-century, 1960s style - a motif that looks like a photo of a wood background covered with gingerbread cookies and evergreen and red berry springs. These traditional German "Bunte Teller" measure 12 1/2" (31.5 cm) in diameter and the fluted edges are 5/8" (1.5 cm) high. The back is printed in green with a popular for the time evergreen and lit candle motif and "Made in Germany" mark. Overall, these plates are in good condition with a few wear notes: a small snag on the back of one and a small spot on the top edge of one - see photos for details. Nice set for that vintage modern look.

Notes: The tradition of "Bunte Teller" - pressed paper bowls or plates arose in the late 19th century following the invention and adoption of paper plates in German in the late 1860s as well as the rise of using wood and glass ornaments and tinsel on Christmas trees. These more permanent and intriguing decorations supplanted the ancient tradition of decorating the tree with apples, nuts, gingerbread and candy. These treats were still considered extraordinary especially for the time of year in cold climates. These treats went from hanging on the tree to being held in a special Bunte Teller for ea h child who would get its own personal selection of treats that they didn't have to share (unless they wanted to). In other countries, stockings and shoes took on the same function as tree decorating became more substantial.

The heyday of these Bunte Teller was 1920 -1960, when plates came in a seemingly endless variety of motifs, reflecting Christmas themes, trendy styles and even cartoon characters. These plates also gave rise to cookie plates in wood and ceramic, adorned with Christmas themes that are used to serve treats on a home table or to give home made cookies as gifts. Most major china producers have created such items for holiday celebrations and include personalization and dating, creating other Christmas memorabilia and collectors.
