Description

Vintage, reproduction print of Pierre-Joseph Redoute's Botanical Engraving of a specimen of the Rosa centifolia foliacea matted and framed in a vintage gold leaf accented frame and coordinating pink mat. The original engraving was part of a bound collection "Les Roses" by the artist which was published as a book in Paris in 1817-24 and could be found on page 290 of the folio. The rose pictured is a rose variety which was developed in the early 1800s in the Netherlands. See below for brief bio on the artist. This mid century, matted and framed reproduction measures 14 3/8" high, 12 3/8" wide and 5/8" deep. It was professionally framed with a dust cover, hanging wire and felt padded corners on the back. In very good condition with still bright colors - no fading, clear background, and only slight wear on the frame. A lovely print with a traditional and botanical flavor for a small space or to add to a collection or gallery wall.

About the artist: Pierre-Joseph Redouté, (1759 – 1840), a Belgian painter was known for his watercolors of roses, lilies and other flowers at the Chateau de Malmaison, which were published as large engravings. Living in Paris, he was an official court artist for Marie Antoinette and later painted for patrons including the wives of Napoleon. Between 1798 to1837, a number of folio editions of colored botanical plates were produced. Collaborating with the great botanists of his day, Redoute contributed to almost 50 publications which depicted familiar flowers of the French Court as well as far flung locales such as Japan, America, Africa and Australia. He produced over 2,100 published plates depicting over 1,800 different species, gaining international recognition for his precise and aesthetic work. His fresh take on botanical renderings is attributed to his work with live plants rather than herbarium specimens which were most frequently used. In addition, Redouté pioneered the intricate colour-printed stipple engraving, finished by hand, that he is know for. Redoute is considered the greatest botanical illustrator of all time.
